RockStrong Case History

An operator was coring in the Smackover formation to understand the production zone and design the best completion system. The US Coring team recommended their RockStrong™ full-closure jam mitigation system with HD Catchers.

US Coring secured the required core using a kelly rig with no issues, but the system became stuck 450 ft out of shoe and was jarred 60k over string weight 70+ times before the core barrel was freed. US Coring recovered 100% of the core even after jarring for multiple hours due to its enhanced core catchers. There was no damage to the tools once reaching the surface nor upon further inspections in the US Coring shop. What a great opportunity to showcase US Coring's people, technology, and processes to a great audience!

Our very own Ryan Rupert presented at this year's 2022 Deepwater Technical Symposium in New Orleans and explained how US Coring leveraged proactive jam mitigation technology in a deepwater coring application in 500 ft of Miocene Sand.

A summary of the job included:
• 503 ft cored
• 495.3 ft core recovered
• 98.4% core recovery
• Four coring runs with 8-in. barrels
• 30 to 50K overpull to break cores (indicates that rock strength projections were good)
• 5 to 12K WOB
• 50 to 65 RPM
• 245 to 255 GPM

LESSONS LEARNED
1. Deepwater Miocene sands can be successfully cored and recovered with large-diameter cores in the GoM in a safe efficient manner.
2. Full-closure coring systems are not required for every coring application in this environment.
3. Longer barrels, up to 240 ft in length, can be successfully run in Deepwater applications.
4. Performance might be enhanced if deflector features are added to the ports on the face of the bit to minimize plugged nozzles and effects of induced fluid invasion on the core.
5. There is value in assembling a true team and in communicating job requirements clearly and often.

Ron will focus on reducing HSE issues and optimizing plant processes and quality. Throughout his career, he has utilized his Lean Six Sigma certification and training to optimize workflows in various R&M facilities in numerous locations, both domestically and internationally.

Ron completed diplomas in Mechanical Engineering and Steam Engineering from Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton AB. In addition, he has earned multiple certifications such as Lean Management and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training.

What a great evening at the AADE Houston Casino Night this past Saturday. They definitely achieved their goal of #makecasinonightgreatagain .

The US Coring team had an incredible time catching up with everyone and supporting the AADE Houston Chapter, which provides much-needed funds for a variety of educational initiatives. Funds raised from the Casino Night sponsored the AADE's University Scholarship program for Texas A&M, University of Texas, and University of Houston students.

Per AADE, each year, up to 10 students have been awarded scholarships based on merit and need. Since 2002, our industry has helped support efforts in an amount just short of one million dollars.

Strawn Sand Formation Case History

An operator needed to secure 150 ft of core in the 8 ¾-in. hole section in the Strawn Sand Formation in Fisher County, Texas, as efficiently as possible.

After meeting with the customer, the US Coring team recommended a solution that included:

The RockStrong™ system with anti-jamming technology

An aggressive 8 ¾-in. x 4-in. FC3743 core head that utilized a selective layout leached PDC cutter design

A fully stabilized 7 ¼-in. x 4-in. x 150-ft coring assembly to keep a stiff assembly centralized in the hole

The 150-ft core operation was completed in a single run with 100% recovery, resulting in an optimized drilling curve. The RockStrong system overcame jamming tendencies, ensuring no downtime, while the core head experienced zero bit damage.

The job was completed with an average rate of penetration of 32.85 ft/hr. The experienced team performed well in a safe workmanlike manner with no lost time or safety incidents.

One Run in West Texas Case History

An independent operator working in the Bone Springs Sands formation needed to complete their coring operation in one run while runnin g a multiple length core to evaluate the reservoir and calibrate their logs. They had issues with past coring operations, only completing 8 ft/hr with competing companies.

After meeting with the operator, the US Coring team recommended its 7 ¼-in. system with a seven-bladed bit, which was specific to the 8 ¾-in. hole application. The US Coring team successfully secured a quality core of 210 ft in 27.88 ft/hr

100% of the core was recovered faster than anticipated with zero HSE issues. The operator completed the coring operation in one run, with no induced fractures or invasion of the rock. According to the operator, “glad you guys were on the job. It went really smooth”.

Lower Wilcox Case History

Challenge

An independent operator drilling in the Lower Wilcox formation needed to confirm the reservoir characterization of their shallow oil and gas well
They also wanted to cost effectively core this well to determine what secondary recovery methods would be appropriate going forward
They hadn’t secured a core in some time so good historical data wasn't available

Solution

The operator chose US Coring due to their past experience in this formation
Despite the fact that a Kelly rig was being used, the operator wanted to complete this project quickly
After meeting with the operator, the US Coring team recommended its 6 ¾-in. system with 8 ¾-in. core bit

Benefit

The US Coring team successfully secured a 4-in. core of 60 ft in 17.2 ft/hr
100% of the core was recovered quicker than anticipated with no HSE issues, at 100% efficiency
The operator saved AFE dollars because of the fast recovery and quality core
